My earlier artwork was always representational, and I needed to develop a number of more modern approaches to widen the circle of potential buyers. The demand for pictures that didn't need framing was quite a new experience as far as I was concerned; having always framed my work in a traditional manner. In 2002 I started developing ideas for bolder floral work, looking at close-up images, magnifying details and bringing out the curves and recesses of complex flowers such as roses. These proved to be an interesting and successful challenge.
Things move on, however, and although I still find this style interesting to paint, I don't want to get in a rut. I have refused to enter the trendy "Abstract" world because I don't consider it to be a suitable platform for what I do. I spend quite some time thinking about what I want to draw or paint, and why, and I prefer that the viewer is able to see straight away what my intentions were ( or, at least, some of them). As a result, I make no apologies for having a mix of both modern and traditional style all on the same page.
