During 2008, I have been drawn back even more towards the soft-pastel medium, which I was introduced to in 1989. It shouldn't be confused with oil-pastels, which are quite a different substance with their own characteristics. Soft pastels have a brilliance and sparkle which is unique to the medium. Pastels are considered "fragile", but once properly framed under glass they are perfectly safe and have a lifespan equally as long as any other major medium.
Pastels can capture Nature in an immediate and direct way, and although I still use oils on occasions, pastels are fast becoming my first choice for the subject-matter.
Nature's movements are easily seen through the action of clouds, swaying trees and leaves, and the ripples of water; both may be calm and tranquil, or dark and agitated.
Effects of light are important, sharp contrasts and distant shores. I usually like to include water in the scenery, if I can. I am also looking for ways of bringing flowers into the landscape; this can only happen when I get the opportunity to go out prospecting for suitable views.
