Florals and Landscape Paintings by Christine
Autumn Echinops (Globe Thistles)
Original acrylic painting on box canvas; measuring 20 x 20 inches x 2 inches depth (50cm x 50cm x 4cm approx). No framing required. Spikey, prickly flowers emerge during mid to late summer, globes of bluish-purple held aloft on grey-green silvery stems. When seen against the light, each globe seems to create a halo around a darker centre; this is due to the covering of thinner delicate flowers on the globes' "surfaces". The canvas for this painting is textured all over lightly with gesso and sand. The major globe thistles (Echinops) have been sculpted using thick gloss gel and allowed to dry, before overpainting with varied shades of blues, metallic blue and pearl lustre. Stems are created with gel and lustre paint, all set against a muted red-orange backdrop. Above the thistles, sunlight strikes through into the masses.
