Cream Tulip.

Pastel pencil on Colourfix paper, with an undercoat of greeny-blue acrylic wash. Size 6" x 16" approx (15cm x 40cm). This piece of work was experimental, working with pastel pencils on the same sanded paper that I normally use for larger pastels. The Colourfix paper was originally Beige shade, and I put several washes of thin acrylic over the surface, for a greener base. The picture was done directly from an open tulip (working time approx 2 hours, plus another 45 minutes the following day to complete the background).

The resulting work has a pleasant mottled surface, created by the deposits of pastel grain in the tooth of the paper. Materials used; Carbothello and Derwent pastel pencils, Art Spectrum Colourfix paper. Pencils tend to be harder than the usual soft pastel-sticks, and their colours are more muted unless you make heavy layers of them. I prefer the more restrained approach. In this picture, the tulip-head is the main subject.

Price: not for sale at this time.
