Original acrylic painting on box canvas; measuring 24" x 24" x 1.75" depth (60cm x 60cm x 4cm). Framing not required, since all edges are painted. My subjects here are all those delicate little golden and orange poppies that you see in early summer, nestling in cracks, garden corners and under shrubs. They have shadows cast on them by other flowers that are not in the picture, giving the opportunity for a different painting approach. I have emphasised these shadows and also the strongly-lit sunny parts, creating a patchwork of flat shapes. The petals have been lightly textured with gel, to give some form, however. I set all the flowers against a warm red background, varied in shades from a slightly cooler, purplish one at the bottom to an orange-red at the top. More close-ups below;
